there is a basic nownage  about about electric motors. For example, single phase motors of this type rely on a capacitor to start but once running the capacitor is effectively redundant.

2 things that pointed to the capacitor:

1) A initial problem was intermittent and only occurred when trying to start the door opening or closing - the door never stopped when traveling up or down (when the capacitor is redundant). Then it stopped working altogether.

2) There is an audible "electrical hum" that lasts about 3 seconds whenever I activate the button and the motor does not start (either remote or wall mounted button). This "hum" is consistent with electricity getting to the windings of the motor but the motor not turning. This suggests that everything is OK up to the motor.
